Abstract

The stakeholders theories have attempted to identify the relevant stakeholders and their role and importance in influencing the higher education structure. The internal or external stakeholders, providers, regulators, and beneficiaries of Indian higher education has been extensively discussed in this paper. The paper begins with a historical overview of Indian higher education. The subsequent part of the pper reflects that the regulators have been playing a dominating role and still continue to do so in terms of influencing almost every aspect related to higher education. While a cobweb of overlaping and conflicting regulators have their own issues, the judicial interference create more confusions than clarifications. The peripheral stakeholders - the external stakeholders are in a state of being influenced more by higher education than being in a position to influence higher education.
