COURSES OF STUDY DURING EARLY MEDIEVAL NORTH INDIA : A STUDY

Abstract

Education deals mainly with an individual and thus the changes occurring in such institutions affect an individual’s position. The traditional courses of study such as : Anviksiki, Trayi, Varta, and Dandaniti faced a setback during early medieval north India. The study of Ayurveda, Arthsastra and vocational subjects also decline in the phase. The study of medical science was already prohibited for a Brahmana and the studies of economics slowly became unpopular among them. On the contrary, the subjects like literature, philosophy and astronomy became more popular. The study of Vedanga, Grammer and astrology gained ascendancy during the period under survey. Many technological courses such as vastuvidhya were also taught. Some scholars like Hemchandra and Kshemdra acquired knowledge in a large variety subjects were polymaths of the age. Besides other subjects in the Buddhist system, tantric studies were also introduced.
