Malaria is one of the major public health problems in India. At the time of independence, estimated annual incidence of malaria in the country was 75 million cases with 0.8 million deaths. Thus economic loss was enormous & estimated to run into Hundreds Crores of Rupees every year. Considering this, Govt. of India launched a National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) in April 1953 as centrally sponsored scheme aimed mainly at reduction of morbidity and mortality, eradication of Malaria diseases, improvement of environment, control of population and improving the health in urban and rural areas.
