Abstract

Financial inclusion has emerged as a tool to achieve inclusive growth for poverty reduction since 2005, a year that the UN has declared International Microcredit Year. Financial inclusion at the Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP) is a focus of governments and businesses in emerging economies. Chaia et al (2009) estimate the size and characteristics of the global population that are excluded from formal financial services: 50% of the global population do not use formal financial services
