Abstract

When God created man, he felt a sense of incompleteness in his act of creation and hence created woman. Woman sums up the entire cosmos. She has been the focal point of both art and life. She is worshiped, desired and domesticated in all ages but simultaneously objectified and condemned. Indian art has looked upon women as an ultimate source of artistic output. Visual art in all its forms, has presented a multi-potent image of her. The spirit of a civilization is indicated by the position of its woman. The status of woman in our Indian subcontinent passed through complex socio-economic terrain . The idea of glorification of womanhood as delineated in visual arts relates to the vocabulary of the artist who has looked beyond time and space in representing woman at her best. The study examines various roles of women as portrayed in Indian art and how their importance is highlighted through different mediums of expression. The paper also analyses the diversity of representation of her roles and looks deeply into her elevated position at all times.
