Abstract

The present research paper deals with Kalidasa’s portrayal of heroines in his plays with special reference to ‘Abhijanasakuntalam’ and ‘Vikramorvasiyam’. As we know Kalidasa is the subtle master of characterization. He has painted his heroines from both outside and inside. He has presented them with the insight of a psychologist. He has imparted the qualities which are essential to the heroines of a play. His heroines are life like. They are not simple but round characters. Their character develop as the play progresses. Their physical beauty as well as inner beauty has been portrayed skillfully. The playwright has shown his negative capability in the creation of his heroines. They are beautiful, vivacious, bold, modest, innocent, witty, chaste, supportive, unfortunate, full of womanliness, mythical and the daughters of supernatural beings.
