Abstract

Along with the birth of anthropology, the nineteenth century saw the development of semi-scientific to wholly unscientific disciplines, such as anthropometry, craniometry or phrenology. Unquestioningly accepting the prevalent concept of race, some scientists constructed facial and nasal indexes or claimed to measure the skull’s volume for every race, of course with the result that the white race’s cranium was the most capacious and its owner, therefore, the most intelligent; others went further, insisting that amidst the white race, only the Germans were the “pure” descendants of the “Aryan race” which was destined the rule the earth.

Abstract

The concept of Global Administrative Law has garnered attention in recent times because of the demand of transparency and accountability of certain Inter Governmental organization and Non Governmental Organizations. The issue at hand is the growth of globalization and its impact on the municipal and International Legal order. The integration of world markets demands accountability, responsible and responsive values to be visible on an international scale. The municipal aspect of Administrative Law is well known, but, its application on a global level entails serious ramifications on the declaratory traditions of Public International Law, the most apparent being, Jurisdiction. Recent work on the accountability of Non Governmental organizations tends to change the morbid and mundane nature of the problem. Crowdfunding on the other hand, is the latest variant of Financial Adventurism. The economic integration of the society has led to the infusion of creative aspects of raising capital for creative satiability and Crowdfunding is one those new areas. Like any other system, Crowdfunding is operated, controlled basically by Nongovernmental organizations who, by using Internet as a platform for raising fund have engineered a fascinating story. But, like any other organization, it has to be controlled and regulated. It is at this point, that Global Administrative Law comes into play.

Abstract

The building sector in India is set to grow exponentially. It already has a huge environmental footprint, with the domestic and commercial sectors consuming some 30 per cent of India’s electricity. The imperative to go green, therefore, is clear. The question is where, and how. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has issued the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) to improve energy performance of buildings by 40-60 per cent. But the use of the code in design is not linked to the actual performance of a building after it has been commissioned. Even after the introduction of green building rating programs, efficient appliance rating programs, policy instruments to deliver green, incentives and awareness programs, the situation is becoming even more alarming. This only raises concerns over the effectiveness of these systems to steer the focus towards reducing impact and increasing efficiency. The use of energy efficient buildings will be a larger step ahead towards sustainable development.

While discussing the ‘reproduction of labor-power’ in his essay “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses” Louis Althusser makes a key observation: Here (in a capitalist regime), unlike the social formations characterized by slavery or serfdom, this reproduction of the skills of labor power tends (this is a tendential law) decreasingly to be provided for ‘on the spot’ (apprenticeship within production itself), but is achieved more and more outside production: by the capitalist education system, and by other instances and institutions. Abstract

It began merely through the economic route, where resources were exchanged in order to exert economic influence over other nations. Globalization has been majorly defined through its economic phenomenon, it is obvious that “humans on all frontiers are being forced either to shift their ideational systems radically and quickly or to live in a thought-world that no longer fits the way their world is” (Keesing&Keesing 1971). Further, Keesing clarifies that as ‘rewards of economic development become universal aspiration’; values are sacrificed at all costs. The era of globalisation as known today has actually led to a form of cultural integration which has embraced political, social and cultural homogenization on a global scale. But the question that rises is how far has this process of worldwide integration been all inclusive in its nature? The basic definition of globalisation tried to capture this hasty social change where all forms of social and cultural life could no longer be identified as separate identities within clear boundaries.

In a context of industrial or consumer products, manufacturers differ how they distribute their products to the consumer. Some of them distribute intensively (using a lot of intermediaries) or exclusively (directly to the consumer). In this paper, we study the problem of the choice of a direct or an indirect distribution. Distribution structure has received little attention by marketing scholars with few empirical studies concerning the channel design. The issue is analyzed by an overview of determinants of distribution structure in literature. The results show that the four most important factors that affect company’s choice of distribution channel are: (1) consumer habits; (2) product characteristics; (3) the market; and (4) company factors.

Globalization is widely contested concept. There is no single universally agreed definition and meaning. In broader term, globalization can be conceived as process of increasing interconnection and interdependence of social, political and economic interaction across frontiers such that events and activities in one region of the world can come to have significant bearing for individual and communities in distant region of the world. The intensity, magnitude and speed of such regularized pattern of interaction owing to development of worldwide system of information communication is so large that time and space has become less and less significant. Although there are scholars who believe that this globalization is nothing new as we had same extensive and intensive trade and finance flow and transaction prior to world war Ist (1870-1913).

Women entrepreneurship development is an essential part of human resource development. Women Entrepreneurship tends to become worldwide a driving force both in terms of number and gross revenues, playing an increasing role in the process of wealth creation . The dynamic networking phenomenon is helping to strengthen female entrepreneurship’s positive impact. . Entrepreneurship amongst women has been a recent concern. Women have become aware of their existence their rights and their work situation. Women entrepreneurship needs to be studied as a separate field for two main reasons: (a). Female entrepreneurship is an important source of economic growth in creating new jobs and by being genetically different: women provide different solutions to management and business issues; (b). Female entrepreneurship has been neglected, particularly in business research. Although equal opportunity for men and women in the entrepreneurial field is not a reality in the short range, the progress towards its achievement could be facilitated by better understanding of the impact of female entrepreneurship on society and its contribution to economic growth. This study explores primary motivational and other factors that influence female entrepreneurship, reviews the main obstacles facing the female entrepreneur, and finally makes recommendations to policy-makers to encourage and support such activity.

The Indian political scene was dominated by just one political party, the Indian National Congress (INC), up to the 90s, except for a brief period in the 70s. Then in the early 90s, a new political force known as BJP (BhartiyaJanta Party), riding on its extremist right wing ideology, emerged.Over the past three decades India has seen a rapid rise of strong regional parties and satraps who not only control the destiny of the denizens of their respective areas of influence but also seek to control the direction of nation policies, processes and politics.Since 1989, no single party has been in a position to form a national government in Delhi without the support of key regional parties. But in India’s decentralized polity, holding just a few seats in parliament makes you an important player – like the All India Anna DravidaMunnetraKazhagam of Tamil Nadu, the Trinamool Congress of West Bengal, and the Samajwadi Party of Uttar Pradesh.

Environmental crisis is a global crisis. There is a saying that ‘Act locally but think globally’. In other words, the damage caused to the environment locally does not confine to that particular topography rather spreads everywhere. There are hundreds of seminars, workshops and innumerable discussions on the issues of environment and equally hundreds of measures are written down in black and white to minimize its desecrations. Despite measures taken in both individual and collective level, the situation is approaching the brink of global disaster. Sometimes the problems are so extensive and far reaching that the future well-being of humanity together with that of many other life forms on the planet is in jeopardy. The crisis has its origination not in the outer Nature but in the very psyche of Man. It is man’s own making. Due to the advancement of science and technology, rapid industrialization, uses of automobiles, careless way of using natural resources, deforestation etc make the Earth hotter day by day. Consequently, global warming contributes for climate change.

Literature is the true reflection of our Society. An author gives words to his thoughts and mentality in his creation. But he draws its elements from the Society itself. The sole aim of a literature is not only to delve the readers deep into a romanticizing imaginative world. The vivid picture of our day to day life is picturised through his dramatic plot and conversation. In the field of aestheticism, the two core element that binds a literature are - (i) conflict and (ii) Crises John Gesner in his book “Natyatatter Ruprekha” States that - “Literature represents humanity in moments of maximum tension conflict and crises”. It is evident from his philosophy that the prime success of a literature depends upon its characterisation. William Henry Hadson thus says - “Characterisation is the really fundamental and lusting element in the greatness of any dramatic work”. The characters itself is the reflection of the dramtists idealism, humour and overall social outlook.

Spousal Violence is a serious problem in India. It has severe physical and mental consequences, and is increasingly treated as a threat to human rights. The present paper seeks to understand the level of prevalence of domestic violence in the selected state of West Bengal. It tries to explore the relationship between spousal age difference and spousal violence. Further, an attempt has also made to identify the factors responsible for high spousal violence in West Bengal. The data is derived from National Family Health Survey (NFHS III) round 3, 2005-06. Both bivariate and logistic regression are used to assess the net effects of socio-demographic and economic factors on spousal violence. The study reveals that despite having high spousal age differences in West Bengal it does not have any significant influence on Spousal violence. Women’s education, Husband’s education, Wealth Index and Work status of women are significantly related to concurrence with wife beating. The paper concludes with the suggestion that more emphasis should be given to the spread of education and improving the living standard of the people by implementing proper and effective policy focusing mainly towards preventing violence against women in the state. Further, efforts should also be made to raise awareness among people about domestic violence and its resultant consequences.

Abstract

Development is a process, which improves the quality of life. It means a progression from a simpler or lower to a more advanced, mature, or complex form or stage. It is also defined as the gradual advancement or growth through a series of progressive changes. Development is a process not a level. It is a path to achieve certain goals. Micro-level planning is the most effective process of economic planning in developing countries like India. There has been wider disparity among the poor and rich section of the society because of the uneven distribution of infrastructure. Thus micro-level planning reinforces and reallocates the development process starting from lowest to highest level for wider balanced regional development. In India, decentralize planning process is a striking feature having planning machinery operating at state and district level operating under National level. Under district level, block is the micro-level unit of implementing different kinds of rural-regional development programmes. Decentralize planning is very effective in reducing in economic and social disparity and participation, effective use of available resources, and overall development of local areas and so on.

Children in especially difficult circumstances need protection, care and rehabilitative services for their growth and development. “The U N estimates that up to 8 million children around the world are living in care institutions, the real number is likely to be much higher, because of chronic gaps in information” (Save the Children, 2009). Unfortunately statistics in India are not available on the magnitude of the problem in different areas, however the enormity of problems faced cannot be doubted in a country where more than one-fourth of the population lives below the poverty line, natural calamities take their toll, unemployment exist on a large scale, the incidence of illiteracy, malnutrition, unsatisfactory housing is large. In such circumstances, children are the worst affected. Children are deprived of opportunities for growth and development. A small number of children are currently covered under welfare services and are fortunate enough to get admitted in institutions.

The study of literature allows us to think more critically about the complex social issues that surround us as young people in the early twenty-first century. By illustrating this function of literary studies, students need to be introduced directly to primary texts that offer different perspectives on human-centric themes such as problems of social class. To achieve this, close readings and written assignments are preferred. In approaching the teaching- learning process of literature in this manner, demonstration should be provided regarding the difficulties surrounding textual analysis. This process enables students to become more critical in analyzing not only the written works of the past but also common individual and social concerns in past and present. Literature’s cultural relevancy is focused by realizing the importance of literary studies in our own lives and society where gender, class and caste play a multidimensional role.

The Indian National Congress first convened in December 1885, though the idea of an Indian nationalist movement opposed to British rule dated from the 1850s. During its first several decades, the Congress passed fairly moderate reform resolutions, though many within the organization were becoming radicalized by the increased poverty that accompanied British imperialism. In the early 20th century, elements within the party began to endorse a policy of swadeshi, which called for the boycott of imported British goods and the promotion of Indian-made goods. By 1917 the group’s “extremist” Home Rule wing, which was formed by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Annie Besant the previous year, had begun to exert significant influence by appealing to India’s diverse social classes. The Congress met once a year during December. The first meeting was scheduled to be held in Pune, but due to a cholera outbreak there, the meeting was later shifted to Bombay. Hume, brought about this first meeting in Bombay, with the approval of Lord Dufferin, the then-Viceroy. Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee was the first President of the INC. The first session of the INC was held from 28–31 December 1885, and was attended by 72 delegates. The party's delegate represented each province of India, among whom 54 were Hindus, 2 Muslim, and the rest were of Parsi and Jain backgrounds.

Indian banking sector has witnessed explosive growth and expansion ever since the era of economic reforms in the form of the liberalization, privatization and globalization was lunched nearly the two decades ago. The growth in the banking sector has created new windows of opportunity for women to find employment in this sector. Till now teaching, nursing, human resource management even medical profession were the areas where women were expected to excel as these were the areas where they could nurture, an extension in a sense of their mothering capabilities. On the contrary manufacturing, stock broking, banking and finance were considered males-only areas as these were assumed to be the areas where analytical skill and ruthless decision making were required instead of high emotional quotients and empathy which are considered to be "feminine" attributes. The attitude was not typical Indian foreign banks we have seven national banks in India at present which are headed by women. This fact clears that women are now entering the top echelons of Indian banking sector and their potential is well recognized by their employers.

My paper is a brief discussion of Bama's book focusing on its critical account of Christianity. I discuss how she depicts her childhood experiences and Christianity, which are seriously assessed in this study. Here, her childhood as a Dalit girl and her youth as a Dalit Christian searching for equality, reality and justice for her community within the Catholic Christian fold, are studied in detail.

Abstract

The female work force participation rate of a country indicates the economic empowerment of women in the society. It is also significant for poverty reduction and enhancing their social status. In India, women constitute almost one half of the population, but only less than one‐third of total workforce. It is evident that women employment is being under enumerated and the major reason for the undercounting of women workers and under valuation of their contribution to the economy is the ‘invisibility’ of their work as well as a narrow definition of the term ‘economic activity’.A lack of information on the nature of unemployment among women has significant implications.Data inadequacies led to misconceptions about women's work roles and their employment needs. It can have serious repercussions on the effectiveness of economic resources allocated to women development schemes. Forexample, employment projects for the poor women would be misdirected ormisinformation about the availability of women for employment may lead totheir non-recruitment.

In July 1991 India has taken a series of measures to structure the economy. New economy brings many changes in many areas. Silent features are liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation that are called LPG. Reasons for implementing LPG are like excess of consumption over revenue resulting high Government borrowing &losses to public sectors enterprises, low foreign exchange reserves etc. Liberalisation means free economy from government control. It was started at the time of Mr P. V. Narasimha Rao's government when Dr. Man Mohan Singh was finance minister and Mr. Chidambaram was commerce minister. Indian MSME sector plays a pivotal role in growth of industrial economy. It is estimated that sector account for 45% contribution in gross manufacturing output and about 40% in export. Marketing myopia is an advertising strategy that does not focus on the needs and wants of consumers, but the desires of a company to sell specific goods or services in the economic market. Marketing Myopia is nothing but a love affair with your product. Companies can benefit by actively researching how consumers are spending their money and what goods are services are currently popular in the economic market. Marketing myopia can distort the company’s view when managers focus more on what the company can produce rather than what consumers are willing to buy.

This article presents an overview of research relating to the neurophysiological effects of yogic breathing techniques called ‘Pranayam’( including Ujjayi, Bhastrika, Kapalbhati and Anuloma Viloma). Recent studies indicate that while the broad outline of neural connections is genetically determined, finer details are subject to change. The efficacy of synaptic transmission and neurotransmitter profile may change, neural connections may proliferate or may show atrophy in response to specific experiences. The practioners of pranayam utilize this neural plasticity to bring about sustained changes in the structure and function of the brain. Methodological challenges in future studies of yogic breathing include choice of control groups, blinding and randomization. Functional MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) has been found to be the best current modality for studying the brain during ‘Pranayama’.

Abstract

Globalization implies the opening of local and nationalistic perspectives to a broader outlook of an interconnected and interdependent world with free transfer of capital, goods, and services across national frontiers. However, it does not include unhindered movement of labor and, as suggested by some economists, may hurt smaller or fragile economies if applied indiscriminately. The concept of globalization 'emerged from the intersection of four interrelated sets of "communities of practice": academics, journalists, publishers/editors, and librarians. In 2000, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) identified four basic aspects of globalization : trade and transactions, capital and investment movements, migration and movement of people, and the dissemination of knowledge. Further, environmental challenges such as global warming, cross-boundary water and air pollution, and over-fishing of the ocean are linked with globalization. Globalizing processes affect and are affected by business and work organization, economics, socio-cultural resources, and the natural environment.

In 1918, Hemingway went overseas to serve in World War I as an ambulance driver in the Italian Army. For his service, he was awarded the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery, but soon sustained injuries that landed him in a hospital in Milan. There he met a nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky, who soon accepted his proposal of marriage, but later left him for another man. This devastated the young writer but provided fodder for his works "A Very Short Story" and, more famously, A Farewell to Arms. Still nursing his injury and recovering from the brutalities of war at the young age of 20, he returned to the United States and spent time in northern Michigan before taking a job at the Toronto Star. It was in Chicago that Hemingway met Hadley Richardson, the woman who would become his first wife. The couple married and quickly moved to Paris, where Hemingway worked as a foreign correspondent for the Star. An early role model for the young Ernest Hemingway was the sports journalist Ring Lardner. Once out of high school Hemingway himself became a journalist, and he used an objective journalistic style throughout his writing career.

CRM systems are designed to compile information on customers across different channels -- or points of contact between the customer and the company -- which could include the company's website, telephone, live chat, direct mail, marketing materials and social media. CRM systems can also give customer-facing staff detailed information on customers' personal information, purchase history, buying preferences and concerns. The new breed of customers is more aware and informed expecting to be served anytime, anywhere amid an endless variety of products and service channel options. They demand consistent experience across all channels, along with more control over the buying process, with a call for more personalized service, relevant messaging and offerings, and greater variety and value for money. The term CRM has many different interpretations. Industrial Revolution was brought about by mechanization of industry, agriculture and transport. In the era of cottage industries, there was equitable distribution of wealth, but with the starting of huge factories and mills, wealth began to concentrate in few hands and the economic power went into the hands of capitalists and industrial magnates. Firm establishment of capitalistic forms of business organization led to evils of profiteering and very high rates of interest. Capital became the king in the economic world and throughout the 19th century there was regular exploitation of poor class of society practically in every country. With the expansion of market from the local to national and international boundaries, there appeared a very long chain of middlemen and intermediaries in the machinery of distribution, trying to link the primary producer and the ultimate consumer.
