Abstract

India has a rich and historical background of absorbing managerial ideas and practices from around the globe. The depth of management principles and prevalence of human resource management practices can be traced to the world’s first management book, titled ‘Arthãshastra’. Since independence, several efforts have been undertaken to strengthen the health infrastructure, its outreach, accessibility and coverage. The human resources for health have been an important determinant for the system but it has received significance recently. India has a severe shortage of human resources for health. It has a shortage of qualified health workers and the workforce is concentrated in urban areas.
