Abstract

Traditional institutions are said to constitute a cultural framework through which people relate socially, emotionally and intellectually and hence they seemly represent an indigenous system of governance and social organisation. As such a careful assessment of the institutions, beliefs and values which legitimise and structure their operation is important towards understanding their relevance and role in a modern state system. This article looks into the workings of a rural Dorbar in the state of Meghalaya.
