This paper is concerned with understanding the nature of peasantry in pre-colonial India and also intends to explore the reasons for unrest in agrarian sector during colonial regime. Peasants played decisive roles in history; in the emergence of empires and also in their downfall. Peasantry, represented vital part of the civil society and enjoyed considerable degree of autonomy in pre-colonial India which started crumbling since colonial regime. Peasants are the inheritors of paradoxical identities bestowed by social scientists, writers to revolutionaries and politicians.
