The poem ‘Civilization Aha!’ exposes the ruthless oppression of the Whiteman on the Black. The poem is an ironic observation on the state of affairs in Africa. The Africans protest against the white man’s cruelties was expressed through various forms; literature was one of the most formidable ways of his protest. The literature of this era speaks of the black man’s life in South Africa; his bitterness, hatred, despair, hope, love and death. The writings expose his challenges, his struggle for survival not only physically but also spiritually and mentally. The period of Apartheid(in South Africa- a policy or systemof segregation or discrimination on grounds of race) witnessed a surge of important writers like Dennis Brutus, Sipho Sepamla, Steve Biko, Oswald Mtshali etc. Many of the readers may not be familiar with the text of the poem.
