Abstract

Transport is backbone of economic, cultural, social and industrial development of anycountry along withits two dimensional role of creating time and space utilities. In the word ofAlfred Marshall, “The transport industries which undertakes nothing more than the meremovement of persons and things from one place to another, have constituted one of the mostimportant activities of men in every stage of advanced civilization.Transport has a great role inthe promotion of production, distribution and commerce. Social significance of transportationcan be very well realized when we talk of the effective implementation of the governmentpolicies and programmes for the benefit of society. To be precise whenever we think of awelfare programme in the field of literacy and education, medical and health care, housing,water supply and sanitation, self- employment, poverty alleviation programmes etc. transportnaturally comes to play its role.
