Abstract

The history of slavery in India is complicated due to the absence of the factors which relate to the definition, ideology and religious perception. We find fifteen kinds of slaves mentioned in Narada Smriti. Manu ‘s list included only seven. But generally five kinds of slaves were like those captured in war, debt slaves, losers in gambling and self sold due to poverty. We notice an increase in the number of slaves in both categories whether engaged in domestic services or in agricultural production. The institution of slavery became more viable when the Muslim inroads multiplied their number into lakhs. These slaves had to perform many duties, some of which mentioned in Hemachandras- Trisastisalaka Purusacharita. The transformation of agricultural labourers was the most notable development of the period.
