Abstract

The tribal communities in India have been closely associated with forest since their habitations were mostly situated in the hilly and inaccessible areas. Most tribal communities are known to have developed their own systems of community based management and governance of their surrounding local natural resources. The first major disturbance in this community based system of management and governance occurred with the onset of colonial rule in India.
