Abstract

Pakistan at its outset in 1947 was idealised as a liberal, democratic and modern Islam-ic nation state based on popular participation and progressive economy. Yet it lost its eastern half before its silver jubilee as a modern nation state. There were serious contours on which the eastern and western vestibules of Pakistan were to go ahead, be it grass root governance in East Pakistan and military rule in West Pakistan or ethnic fault lines.
