Abstract

Technological breakthrough of mid-sixties in agricultural sector helped India to become self-dependent in foodgrain production. Since then, the population of India has increased from 500 million to more than 1400 million. Area under foodgrain cultivation can not be increased beyond a limit. Therefore, increase in productivity of crops is the only option which remains open to feed the increasing population.
