Abstract

This article titled “Importance of Ghats in Sraddha rituals” will look at various aspects of how and why Ghats emerged as important part of ritual activity during early medieval time period in India. It emerged as the characteristic features of this time period and was continued in the subsequent time periods. Even today Ghats play important roles in Hindu tradition. It is perceived that after taking bath in holy waters on Ghats one becomes ready for performing rites of all sorts. Also by taking dips in waters on Ghats, one gets rid of all kinds of sins and gets exempted from the effects of pollution. In this article i would discuss particularly about the kind of role Ghats played in Sraddha rituals. My sources that include literary texts, basically Puranas and few inscriptions provided me with different kinds of informations related to this topic.
