Abstract

The European Union is an outcome of unique economic and political partnership between 28 European countries based on the idea of regional integration. It is a successful experiment on cooperation by the European countries destroyed by the two world wars. In the latter half of the 20th century, it has emerged as a unique supranational organisation which aims to promote peace, growth and development not only inside Europe, but also all across the world. The EU is globally appreciated for its approach and efforts for democracy promotion in all corners of the world. Democracy is not just an objective of the EU to be achieved through aid and assistance; it’s a concept which determines the nature and scope of its each and every activity both inside and outside the EU. It’s the thread which ties the member states of the EU with each other. Democracy occupies pivotal position in almost all the declarations, policies and progammes of the EU and it promotes the practice of democracy not only in political sphere, but in the socio-economic spheres as well through the instruments of soft power which makes it a unique actor in the global politics of the contemporary era.
