TRADITIONAL FOLK MEDIA FOR PEACE AND HARMONY: AN OVERVIEW OF MANIPUR

Abstract

To maintain peace and harmony in a country like India, which has different hues and shades of culture and diversity, effective medium of communication right from grass root level is required. For communication at grass root level, traditional media are the most potent medium of communication. As for accessing to traditional media no electric, no 2G/3G is required in short zero technology media. Manipur one of the border states of India is rich in traditional folk media as different traditional media with their live performance and presentation bring development, harmony, and recreation in the life of the people. ‘Shumang Lila’ which literally means ‘courtyard play’ is one such kind of the traditional media of Manipur, it is one of the most potent and effective medium of communication considering its wide reach, effective delivery mechanism and ability to mobilize public opinion. In a democratic society, public opinion is like a voice of change and improvement.
