BAHU BEGUM: ROLE IN THE POLITICS OF AWADH

Abstract

The article gives peek in the life of one of the most popular and the richest begum of Awadh, Ummat-ul-zohra, chief queen of nawab Shuja-ud-daulah. She was popularly known as Bbahu Bbegam. She was the daughter of Motamn-ud-daulah nawab Mohammad Ishaq khan, a great leader of mughal court. .Her marriage was negotiated and performed by the mughal emperor Mohammad Shah. Bahu begam, though illiterate, was shrewd lady with great abilities. She had great understanding of the court politics. Her enormous wealth attracted evil intentions of the British, her son and his ministers.
