Abstract

On April25, 2015, 11:56:26 (time) an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 with a depth of 15.0 km (9.3m) whose epicenter was 28.147 N 84.708 E occurred in Nepal and affected Nepal, India, China and Bangladesh and caused major loss of life and property. The aftershocks of the violent earthquake are felt for many days and still the region is in instability. Officially, it caused death of 8,675 persons and injured 21, 952 persons. It also caused avalanche at Mount Everest and destruction of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu, Nepal. The people are affected both socially and economically. Disasters of very high magnitude have occurred in the recent past along major plates and fault lines and will occur in the future too. The question is what lessons we have learned from the disasters and are we as an individual prepared to safeguard ourselves from a sudden disaster. This paper suggests strategies to prepare ourselves to protect from disasters.
