Abstract

Infant mortality has remained a persistent problem throughout the world, even developed countries unable to reach to a zero level. The major problem lies in certain condition originating in the perinatal period which is responsible for most of the neonatal deaths. Establishing Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) is a major step by the government which will be able to solve problems like hypoxia, birth asphyxia, and other respiratory conditions at the time of birth but the proposed number of SNCUs seems very low for country like India. On the other hand problem like malformation of any organ of foetus can only be solved by routine foetus test and ultrasonography by specialists. It is found that ultrasonography is not widely promoted in antenatal care which potentially can reduce neonatal deaths as well as maternal mortality.
