EMERGENCE OF PEASANT ENTREPRENEURS IN RURAL KASHMIR: A CASE OF A VILLAGE IN KULGAM DISTRICT OF KASHMIR VALLEY

Abstract

The twenty first centaury has changed agricultural practices throughout the world. Earlier peasant populations were cultivating agricultural products only for domestic use. But after transitions in the sector peasants have started cultivating market oriented produce to raise family incomes and attain economic sustainability. With the transformation in cultivation practices from domestic crop cultivation to cash crop cultivation, the importance of agricultural sector has increased and peasant entrepreneurs are emerging out in the rural social structure as an important class responsible for marketing and financial affairs of the cultivated cash crops and fruits by the peasants throughout the world as well as in the valley of Kashmir. The paper shall provide a detailed account of emergence of peasant entrepreneurs in the agrarian system of the state and their role in the process of production and marketing of cash crops and fruits.
