Out of the all the natural resources, land resource is the prime one. A city grows not only by population but also by changes in spatial dimensions. Urban population growth and urban sprawl induce land use changes and land transformation. The land transformation is a natural process and cannot be stopped but it can be regulated. Many geographical changes at the urban periphery are associated with the transfer of land from rural to urban purpose. The growth of KotlaMubarakpurmeasured between two different time periods was based solely on the secondary sources. The change analysis was performed by post classification comparison method, comparing the data of two different time periods, for which GIS tools were used. The results showed that there was rapid change in land cover/land use and highlights the major impact of rapid urbanization and population growth on the land cover changes which needs immediate attention. It was found that there was a phenomenal change in the built-up area, loss of barren and open areas and change in agriculture land. There is a great need for sustainable management of resources to maximise benefits of societal resources.
