GENDER INEQUALITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION – A STUDY IN THE KARBI-ANGLONG DISTRICT OF ASSAM.

Abstract

Educational inequality is recognized as a curse of nation’s progress. Inequality always obstructs everyone’s path of development. Different eminent educationists had been inspired to provide equality of opportunity in education. Equality in higher education indicates provisions of opportunities to all those who have the required ability to profit from such education and make proper social contribution to return. Despite large scale expansion of educational facilities during seven decades after independence, glorying inequalities still remain in higher education more particularly to the poor and rich, rural and urban and between boys and girls. Karbi-Anglong is the 16th most popular district out of total 27 districts of Assam under the six schedule of Indian Constitution. Last census years show that continuously, there is gender inequality in literacy rate in this district. With some related problems, opportunities of Higher education in rural and urban areas, poor and rich people are not equally distributed in it. Higher education is the new challenge before us that within the year 2020, we must convert our society not only economically vibrant society but also a new society where justice and new values prevail has to be created. Creating such society, we all of us- rich and poor, rural and urban, boys and girls urgently educated with higher education.
