“ THEME OF LOVE AND FATE” AS ‘PROS AND CONS’ OF EXISTENTIALISTIC APPROACH IN HARDY

Abstract

The word “theme”, now the most hackneyed of cliches in criticism, is also one of the bugbears. Only within the framework of this central drive can the real significance of the detail be grasped at all. To connect, for example, Giles Winterborne’s –The Woodlanders- meeting with Grace while he holds up his apple tree in the market place merely with the theme or rural fertility, and Marty South’s selling her hair with the “commercial themes” would be implicitly informative as well as indicative. Thus, several of the incidents in Hardy’s works forge the sustained metaphor.
