Abstract

In a democracy, the question of how voter’s choices are constrained and conditioned has become a cornerstone for any voting behavior analysis. The conditioning takes place due to existing electoral system, limited range of voting options, social and geographic context in which voters live and the ways in which politics is presented to the voters. Elections and the consequent distributions of governmental power help determine the interest equilibrium between different sectors of society- urban and rural residents, rich and poor, men and women, public and private sector workers and those with different religious, linguistics, racial or ethnic backgrounds. As a result, rational and self interest voters might vote for the parties that further their group interests. This led to the rise of social cleavage voting- voting that reflects economic, religious, linguistics, ethnic and other interests.
