CO-OPERATIVE BANKING IN SIKKIM - AN OVERVIEW

Abstract

The co-operative bank is one of the main partners of Indian banking structure. The co-operative banks have more reach to the rural India through their huge network of credit societies in the institutional credit structure. The cooperative sector has been playing an important role in the economy of the country. Cooperatives have ideological base, economic objects with social outlook and approach which covers almost all villages in India. The cooperative organization helps in uplifting the economically weaker sections of the society. The government of Sikkim started the cooperative movement in 1955. At present SISCO Bank Ltd (cooperative bank of Sikkim) which is performing multipurpose functions of financial, administrative, supervisory and development in nature of expansion and development of various urban and rural areas of Sikkim. This paper attempts to analyze the performance of SISCO Bank Ltd. (The Sikkim State Co-operative Bank Ltd.)in the economic development of Sikkim.
