Abstract

Currency fluctuations play huge role on business in countries and they have correlation with inflation and governmental debt.In an international trade involve different currencies; the variability of foreign exchange rates is a potentially interesting factor that drives the level of profitability of firms as it affects their financial intermediation process. This study is undertaken to examine the impact of exchange rate on economic growth of India dependent on three variables, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Interest rate and Inflation rate during 2001 to 2017. According to standard deviation it is observed that the GDP growth is more consistent than exchange rate, interest rate and inflation rate during the study period in India. The coefficient of correlation 0.156 indicates that the correlation between exchange rate and GDP growth is positive but not significant. This paper also examines the statistical performances such as the mean, standard deviation of the Indian currency Rupee (INR) against US Dollar for a period of 16 years (2001-2017). It also attempts to study the impact of the global financial crisis on the overall economy of India by analyzing the variations in major economic factors for the above-mentioned period.
