Abstract

Retailing is about displaying products, describing the features and benefits of products, stocking products, processing payments and doing whatever it takes to get the right products at the right price to the right customers at the right time. Electronic retailing is the sale of goods and services through the internet. E-tailing requires businesses to tailor traditional business models to the internet and its users. This paper integrates a comparative study on e on retailing and consumer choice to develop an economic model of consumer choice in which a consumer self-selects between on-line and in-store shopping. Two important factors impacting consumer choice between on-line versus in-store shopping are identified: (1) the retail context utility and (2) the consumers' perceived product and service risks.
