Abstract

For decades Shakespearean plays have been serving as an inexhaustible treasure of themes for the Bollywood directors. So much so that the famous actor Naseeruddin Shah goes to the extent of saying “The roots may look lost, but every big story in the Hindi film industry is from Shakespeare.” But this is a give and take relationship. The Bollywood directors have kept turning towards Shakespeare for thematic inspiration but they have constantly been contributing to keep the legacy of Shakespeare alive. Angoor, a 1982 Hindi film, directed by ace directer Gulzar and produced by Jai Singh is one of the earliest successful Hindi film that is based on Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors”. Interestingly the film is a kind of remake of the 1963 Bengali film ‘ Bhrantibilas’,based on the Bengali novel of Ishwarchand Vidyasagar of the same name, which in turn was inspired by ‘Comedy of Errors’.Angoor is a movie of two sets of identical twins who are two sets of master and servant. The main characters in the movie are Sanjeev Kumar, Deven Verma, Moushami Chatterjee, Deepti Naval and Aruna Irani but in reality Fate plays the lead role in the film.this paper aims to explore how ‘Comedy of Errors’,a romantic comedy of Shakespeare has been aesthetically reshaped to suit the Indian palate.
