CONSUMER SHOPPING BEHAVIOUR AT RETAIL STORES IN TAMILNADU

Abstract

India is a huge country with enormous natural resources to relish with. Gratitude to globalization, Indian population got themselves exposed to western culture, with the traditional customs and practices taking the backseat. Retailing in India is receiving global recognition and attention and this emerging market is witnessing a significant change in its growth and investment pattern. India’s retail sector is wearing new clothes and with a three-year compounded annual growth rate of 46.6 per cent, Retail is the fastest growing sector in the Indian economy. Traditional markets are making way for new formats such as department stores, hypermarkets, supermarkets and specialty stores. Over the last decade, the Indian consumer market has seen a significant growth in the number of Retail Stores. Rapid advances witnessed by India in areas like education, communication; information technology and transportation have created a sense of freedom in the minds of people. Consumers are seeking convenience at their door - step for regular purchases, but are willing to travel to exclusive destination for valuable items. This study is aimed at examining the shopping behaviour of the respondents of the retail stores in Tamil Nadu. Customers go through a lot of evaluation process before deciding where to buy and how to buy. Therefore based on the above results and discussions it can be concluded that, “Shoppers are different in their shopping behaviour in selection of an outlet, the results bring out that retailers can no longer assume that all shoppers are the same.
