Abstract

As migration is one of the three pillars of demography, its data is as important as of fertility and mortality. In India, census has been taken at the interval of every 10 years and composition of population is changing continuously, as per meet the requirement of data the estimation of population is done. The objective of this paper is to estimate the net migration rate for major states of India for total, male, female, rural and urban population by using Life Table Survival Ratio (LTSR) method and for all states by Census Survival Ratio (CSR) method. For calculating survival ratio for 2011, SRS Abridged life table with split period 1998-2002, 2003-07 and 2008-12 has been used, and survival ratio is calculated from each period respectively, and then the average survival ratio during 2001-11 is calculated. Both the methods are showing that EAG states have negative out migration and developed states like Mumbai, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu are gaining states in terms of migrants. There is negative net migration in rural India or if positive, the number of in-migrants is very less and states like Bihar and UP are losing more number of females than male. Because of over enumeration and under enumeration of the same cohort at two different censuses affects the value of survival ratios calculated in CSR method. The two methods are giving different values of net migration for every state, but they are in same direction in most of the cases as gaining region like, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat from both the methods remained as gaining and same is for the loosing states, but CSR is giving better result and also, the SRS based Abridged Life Table is only available for major sates of India so the most suitable method for country like India is Census Survival Ratio method for estimating internal migration.
