Abstract

Like other Romantic poets, Chatterton is fascinated by the chivalry, adventure, tales of love, superstitions, belief in magic and witchcraft and spirits and fairies of the Middle Ages. His poems reveal his love for the middle ages as Chatterton takes keen interest in the supernatural. In fact, the pera natural phenomena depicted by Chatterton constitutes a shadowy world. It is not a world observed by the conscious mind; rather it is a universe of dreams, conceived in the sub-conscious where imagination finds its full flow. His verses gave inspiration to Coleridge and Shelley. The period during which his visionary Rowley poems were being conjured into being was the most important epoch of his career. He lived a double life, one amid an imaginary group of ideal people he had created and who appeared as real to his youthful mind as did the commonplace, selfish and vulgar community his fate had caused him to mix with. Actually his antique world endowed him a sense of freedom denied him elsewhere. He experienced the emotions and creative energies of a doomed yearning for a fulfillment.
