Abstract

The concept of eco-cities is not something new, for example, in 1970; the Cosanti foundation in the US began building Acrosanti, an experimental town in the high desert of Arizona. In China also the experiment of eco-city is being made on a large scale. Eco-cities have been attracting attention of the world for years. The concept of the eco-cities is aligned with the concept of sustainable development. Eco-city project has been launched in India. Six cities in the India, namely, Kottayam, Puri, Tirupati, Ujjain, Vrindavan and Thanjavour have been selected in the pilot phase of the Eco-city Programme. The projects undertaken under the pilot phase of the Programme for the respective towns are under various stages of implementation. The Programme which was initiated during the Tenth Five Year Plan is being continued during the first year of the Eleventh Plan. This Eco-cities Programme was initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in the Tenth Five Year Plan, which is being implemented by the Central Pollution Control Board through the concerned State Pollution Control Boards and Municipalities. The Programme has been conceptualized to improve the environment and bring in visible results through implementation of identified environmental improvement projects in the selected cities. Eco-city project includes various schemes of improvement in traffic system, maintenance of drain, solid waste management, plantation and landscaping and other relevant schemes as well as demands public awareness.
