Abstract

The ‘green planet’ only known home for living beings in our universe, is under continuous threat of destruction through pollution of environment. The environment as commonly understood means outer physical and biological system in which man and other organisms live as a whole. The environment includes air, space, water, land, plants, wild life, flora fauna etc. Human development has generally been parasitic on the environment. There is fundamental interdependence between environment, physical, biological and social surroundings. The clean environment is needed for proper sustenance of life on the earth. But unfortunately the environment is degrading rapidly. The human activities in the name of development and for the lust of wealth are contributing to degradation. The limitless demand of the man and his consumption patterns have made him forget the fact that human life is sustained by air, food and water. The massive industrialisation, over production, over exploitation of resources, nuclear radiations, industrial wastes, industrial accidents, brutal exploitation of forests, indiscriminate quarrying, denudation of lands, destruction of vegetation, pollution of water resources, increase of air and noise pollution are contributing factors for environmental degradation
