E –RETAILING IN INDIA: EMERGING TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD

Abstract

The retail industry in India is among the fastest-growing sector in the world. The contribution of e- retailing in the Indian market is not at par when compared to other developing economies. A.T. Kearney Global Retail E-Commerce index revealed that India has failed to appear among the top 30 developed and developing countries. Although in recent years, the E-tailing industry in India has shown rapid growth from around Rs 15 billion revenues in 2007-08 to Rs 139 billion in 2012-13, translating into a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 56 percent. According to RNCOS, a leading consulting firm, the Indian Retail market is expected to grow over 4-fold to touch $ 14.5 billion by 2019. This is because of the augmentation of the telecom industry which in turn has offered internet accessibility to the youth of the country. This has led to the escalation in the number of online shoppers especially in tier II, tier III and other upcoming cities of the country. This paper aspires to study the changing face of the Indian retail industry with special reference to the emerging trends in the e-retail sector in the country, various challenges faced by the industry the possible way out for the growth in the e-retail sector.
