• Sufism arrived a year before the Islamic invasion in India in 1191 AD when Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti settled in Ajmer and started the Indian phase of Sufism. The beginning of Sufi movement was as old as Islam itself, and as powerful as the new religion itself. The uniqueness of Sufi movement was its Islamic framework and liberal social approach with ability to connect with local people and communicate the core ideas of Islam without being as strict as the new religion appeared to be. Naturally Sufi saints appropriated social space that was allowed to be vacant and unoccupied by the Islamic clergy and the state. It happens with almost all religions wen the official and the statist form of religion is unable to connect with the people at large and people from other religions that the liberal or at least apparently accommodating variants or constituents, like Sufism, fills the gap
