Abstract

Scheduled Castes are considered to be the most vulnerable section due to their lowest position in the caste hierarchy. For promoting their representation in the field of education, the government has taken a systematic effort to equalize their opportunities in all levels of education. When the constitution of India came into effect, the government of India has committed to ensure equality of opportunities through its various articles such as, Article 14(right to equality), Article 15(prohibition of discrimination), Article 21 A(free and compulsory education), Article 26(1)(education as fundamental right) and Article 46 ( special care and protection) etc. According to, Article 46 of the constitution states that, “the state shall protect with special care the educational and economic interests of the weaker sections especially the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes”. On the basis of these articles, the strategy of positive treatment namely reservation policy was framed to accelerate the integration of these unprivileged sections with mainstream society by providing higher education. The policy of reservation existing in the form of reservation of seats in higher education, relaxation of marks in admission procedures, concession in fee, free hostel facilities, scholarships/grants etc., to minimize the wide gaps of educational development among the different weaker sections.
