Abstract

When the body is the site of social control, expression of ritual suppression, and the same body is appropriated for domestic labour and continuation of lineage, the combined burden deprives that body any access to self. More often than not this happens with women, who are at the receiving end of the gendered discourse of family, social and ritual complexes and creation of structured society. Most societies develop methods to control bodies, to regulate procreation and control the way society and a particular culture. All social stratifications like caste, religion and all rituals and taboos are carefully constructed to obtain that goal.
