NEW MEANING OF FOOD BASED SOCIAL INEQUALITIES: WOMEN IN FILMS

Abstract

Hindi films are more than just visual cultures as they are now instrument of mainstreaming, nationalist discourses set by the dominant groups and instrument of social control and subjugations. Films in India, and I am sure this applies to all major cinemas of the country and not just Hindi, is being used by the expressive class to appropriate all lateral social spaces available. From ritual to sacred to secular- all spaces have been conquered by films. Hollywood or other cinemas too attempt to do that but due to higher income levels and better spread of general education coupled with wide reach of new media, cinema alone could not dictate the social and political trajectory of the people and cultures. In India due to massive poverty and thin spread of general education, people tend to follow and absorb the narrative of films as dominant discourse that set agendas. There have been instances of political agendas setting the narrative of the films but generally films create their own plots, set their own narratives and operate within socially accepted paradigms and create a counter-counter culture of mainstreaming the social and ritual values.
