FOLKSONGS PRACTICED IN SATRAS OF ASSAM WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE BARPETA, BORDOWA AND NUTAN CHAMAGURI SATRA

Abstract

Folksongs are the core of each culture irrespective of rural and urban context; especially these songs are used as performing art in different situations. In Assam to preach the Vaishnavism two organisations were established by the great guru Sankaradeva (1949-1968 A.D), the initiator and the principal preacher of Vaishnavism Satra, broadly the Vaishnavite monastery is the supreme organisation of Assam’s Vaishnavism. In this institution the Vaishnavite scriptures generally translated from Sanskrit are read recited and sung and also presented through various performing arts. However, along with this some of the folksongs are also performed there by the male group, female group and sometimes by the males and female together in the Satra premises, in some community areas or at different household. Among the folksongs of the Satras the nama or the diha nama is very popular among the Vaishnavites and also non Vaishnavites of the state. In this paper an attempt has been made to evaluate the folksongs of the satras of Barpeta, Bordowa and Nutan Chamiguri Satra of Assam. Data for this paper have been collected from the aforesaid areas through the methods like participant and non participant, interview and case study method during the year 2019.
