Abstract
Work stress has been a topical research subject for almost eight decades in science, academic and practitioners’ fields. Within diverse organizational and work psychology fields of research, it is acknowledged that occupational stress remains an albatross because of its detrimental consequences on employees’ psychological wellness, physical health, work-life balance and negatively associated with outcomes such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, turnover and productivity. It is therefore, important to understand the causes, symptoms and effects of occupational stress on organizational performance. The data used for this study was generated by convenience random sampling of employees working in public sector organizations in Uttarakhand. The findings from this study show that occupational stress affects employees in several ways and is a major source of employee s turnover in many organizations. Suggestions have been made to inspire managers to understand and develop appropriate interventions to manage and minimize stress in their organizations.
