Purnia district is one of the state Govt. declared industrially backward districts of Bihar, which is eligible for capital subsidy and finance at a concessional rate. The industrial development of the district has so far taken place mainly in the field of small scale industrial units particularly based on agricultural resources of the district, except the three medium and large scale units consisting of 1 straw board unit. 1 MG Kraft paper unit and 1 sugar mill. A large no. of rice mills can be seen in this district which is probably the highest in the state.
