Abstract

The Kosi the Hwang Ho of Bihar and the wildest and most uncertain among the Indian rivers. Within the last two hundred years it has marched over 75 miles from near the town of Purnea into the Tilguga at the Western borders of Saharsa and Supaul districts. In course of its West Ward shift it has converted nearly 2700sq. miles of fertile rice land into sandy flats and marshes and seriously disturbed the rural economy of the area which supports the large size of population. People have been anxious for training the river but not to the extent of its restless vagaries and devastations. Some attention was paid during the 19th century and towards the binning of the 20th century to study the character of the Kosi.
