PERFORMANCE OF BANKS IN INDIA: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PUBLIC SECTOR AND PRIVATE SECTOR BANKS SINCE 1991

Abstract

The banking sector reforms were initiated in India in the year 1991 with an aim to enhance their performance. The objective of present paper is to examine the extent to which performance of commercial banks have improved since 1991. It compares performance of public sector with private sector banks. The study utilizes secondary data ranging from 1991 to 2012. The performance measures used in this research include per employee advance and deposits, market share in deposits and advances, net profit to total assets, non-interest income to total income, net NPA to net advances and capital adequacy ratio.
