Abstract

This paper attempts to analyse the role of language in objectifying women thereby dictating women’s position and disposition. In the backdrop of rising heinous acts against women, the study examines the function of language and intends to bring societal changes to propagate genderless language in English. Further, it examines how hostile attitudes shape among individuals by exploring the pyramid of Abuse. Objectification or dehumanization of women appears in many forms, existing in varying degrees across all cultures and countries. In order to prevent infliction caused on women, many organizations and institutions are working to dig into the roots to find the origin that shapes the form of violence. The pyramid in the picture below shows the formation of violence. It is adapted from the work by the centre for the study of sport in society by North-Eastern University, Boston, America, and further modified by Haven uproot. The pyramid of abuse illustrates how subtle forms of sexism can, if left unchecked, progresses and shapes into more cruel forms of violence and misogyny.
