Abstract

Urbanization is one of the major phenomena of modern times and the use of urban land is a major field of research for various academic disciplines. The classical studies of Burgess, Hoyt, Ullman, Garrison, Harris and Nelson have laid down conceptual foundations of this field of study. The classical concentric zone model proposed by the sociologist, Burgess (1925), is based largely on his studies of the Chicago city region. He stated that land used within the city of Chicago was organised into zones which had their own distinct features, and were used for different purposes.
