AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF SOCIO ECONOMIC PROBLEM OF PEOPLE BELONGING TO SLUM AREAS

Abstract

Socio economic status is an identical term that is mainly used for assessment of livelihood. Socio economic performance of slum dwellers of a semi urban area is an important parameter for the development of the country. It shows individual’s or population’s living standard, lifestyle and all over development and progress. The education and occupation are the most important elements in the study of socio economic status of population. Besides these elements, caste is also taken into consideration. Slum is an unhygienic place for human settlement. Poverty affects the health, education, nutrition, birth and death ratio, life expectancy, etc. Urban industrialization changes the face of urban area, its functions too. City’s traditional function served to optimum threshold but today it served more thresholds through malfunctioning. It has provided better income in comparison to rural area. Rural threshold has been migrating to urban areas in search of jobs. But these migrants are low educated, unskilled or skilled labour force for urban industrialization. So they are paid low which is not optimum for their basic needs and requirements. Due to high land cost in urban areas, they shelter in open land, other pieces of of city, places near to industrial area and footpath. this process gives rise to slums and slum area.
