FROM ‘SEX’ TO ‘GENDER’: THEORIES OF GENDER TYPING

Abstract

Male and Female children become Masculine and Feminine, respectively, at a very early age. By the time they are four or five, for example, girls and boys have typically come to prefer activities defined by their culture as appropriate for their gender and also prefer same sex peers. This acquisition of sex-appropriate behaviors, skills, attitudes, preferences etc., is referred to as the process of ‘Gender typing’. There are many theories of gender typing. The most influential theories, namely, Psychoanalytic theory, Social learning theory, Cognitive developmental theory and Gender schema theory form part of this paper.
